LIWS (Liquid Integrated Waterproofing Systems) refers to waterproofing with liquid materials that after drying form an Integrated and Seamless membrane. This layer will be free of joints, which are usually the main cause for future leaking. When waterproofing is applied by sheet membranes, joints often are the source of further leaks.
When applying a liquid material, the new membrane will be an Integrated part of substrate due to the high adhesion of material. Therefore, there won’t be any gap between the two different substrates (base and waterproof membrane) to let the water run under the membrane; and this is one of the main difficulties of diagnosing the leakage source.
When waterproofing membrane is a roll or sheet, the source of the leak could be anywhere when the membrane is prefabricated sheets. However, when waterproofing applied by liquid products, if in any circumstances water penetrates the substrate (wall or ceiling), the source of the leak is the place you see the wetness.
In this article, I list the advantages of LIWS and why it is better to do waterproofing with liquid materials rather than prefabricated membrane.
It is Safe
Being Seamless is one of the major advantages of liquid applied waterproofing membranes. The joints sealed by any means in prefabricated sheet membranes (heat/ironing, adhesive or sewing) are generally the main reasons for future leakages to occur.
The human errors are more common in installing the prefabricated membranes than applying liquid materials with pump or manually.
It is Fast
Applying the waterproofing with pump could be 6 to 8 times faster than regular methods of waterproofing, considering the conditions of job.
Applied by pump, two persons (operator and helper) could cover 6000 to 8000 sqf in one shift of 8 hours!
It is highly adhesive
The adhesion of products to most of substances make it a great choice for any jobs need waterproofing or covering.
When the waterproofing layer is applied on a surface, if the membrane gets damaged (a hole or scratch), because of the adhesion of formed membrane, the water doesn’t have any space to run under the membrane and therefore it is easier to diagnose and repair.
It is elastic
The liquid materials form an elastic and strong membrane like linoleum. The elasticity could be from 300% to 600% for different products and applications. This feature covers the movements of various materials (expansion and contraction of cement and metal, for instance) and cracks or tears won’t happen.
Repair is easy
If there is any place which needs repair, there is no need to remove the old membranes. It could be applied on top of the problem area to fix it with lowest costs, possible.
